OVERVIEW

nThe Bible was first translated into Japanese by Jesuit missionaries in the sixteenth century. The Shinkaiyaku Seisho, or New Japanese Bible, was first published by the Japanese Bible Society in 1970. It was among the first complete Japanese Bibles translated wholly from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Today the Shinkaiyaku Bible is the predominant translation used among Protestant denominations in Japan. The translators adopted an essentially literal translation philosophy, aiming to balance word-for-word and thought-for-thought translation strategies, comparable to the English Standard Version. n n
